Transportation is a vital aspect of living independently for everyone. For people with disabilities, accessible and dependable transportation is especially important for traveling to work, school, job training, places of worship, stores and medical facilities.
Improving transportation for people with disabilities in Pennsylvania has been a major focus for the disability community. We achieved a significant victory a few years ago with the creation of the Persons with Disabilities Rural Shared-Ride Program. Thanks to the powerful combination of the Rolling Justice Campaign and talking with policy makers at the state Capitol, the program is now available in 49 of the 65 eligible counties.
Through a wonderful collaboration with the Pennsylvania Transportation Alliance, advocates continue to push for expansion of the program statewide. Building on our successes, the goals of the disability community are also expanding to include transportation as a whole.
