Letter to the Editor

County should join program for rides for disabled people

Editor:

As a person with a disability I would like to thank state Sens. Mellow and Musto, and state Reps. Eachus, Mundy, Yudichak, Wansacz and Caroll for voting for legislation which enables Luzerne County to finally join a state funded transportation program for people with disabilities. Luzerne County is one of 16 counties without the program and by far one of the largest.

I strongly urge the Luzerne-Wyoming Counties Transportation Department to finally apply for the program. The time for excuses has passed. The state will be offering money to buy more vehicles and discount 85 percent of the fare.

It is embarrassing the county doesn’t already have the program considering Carbon, Schuylkill, Monroe, Columbia have it and 20 percent of Luzerne County residents have a disability, according to the U.S. Census. Most important, it is about creating greater independence and quality of life for thousands of people with disabilities who could not get to work, school or other activities without it. These are the same rights and desires that all Americans want.
